TESTING A VEHICLE BATTERY

At some point during a vehicle’s lifespan, owners may notice that the headlights are dimmer than normal. Perhaps the vehicle is harder to start. Equipped with a simple inexpensive voltmeter, owners may quickly determine if the battery is the underlying problem.

Voltmeters feature analog or digital displays. The latter versions are easier to read. Before starting, wear a pair of rubber gloves to prevent possible injury. Make sure that the vehicle’s ignition is turned off along with any of the electronic features.

Connect the red positive clamp to the battery’s positive terminal. Connect the black negative clamp to the battery’s negative terminal. Turn the meter on and evaluate the reading. A well-charged battery provides a reading of 12.4 volts or higher. Anything under 12 volts indicates that the battery may be at the end of its lifespan.
