Whether you’re taking in the autumn foliage or the lush green of spring, there’s no shortage of roads where you can get out of town and see the spectacular beauty of the Ozarks. Here are a few of our favorite scenic drives in Missouri near Springfield. We hope they inspire you to hit the road in your Cadillac and see something wonderful!
Cabool is the gateway for Ozark visitors to explore Mark Twain National Forest in this 45-minute drive along highways 181 and AP until it ends at highway 14. You’ll meander through the hills, with plenty of places to stop and wade in creeks and take in spectacular views.
She’s not called the Mother Road for nothing! The American road trip was all but invented on Route 66, and a portion of the road runs through the Republic area. While Interstate 44 roughly follows the original Route 66, it lacks the original sites in the small towns. Stop by the Munger Moss Motel and the Route 66 Museum in Lebanon, the murals in Cuba, and Devil’s Elbow Bridge in Pulaski County. You can even make the hour-long byway trip to Carthage and catch a drive-in movie!
Glade Top Trails is a National Forest Scenic Byway—the only one in Missouri, and it’s just a bit southeast of Springfield. You’ll marvel over views that reach over 40 miles of rolling hills from atop the narrow ridges of the Ozark Hill Country along Glade Top Trail, which begins at the intersection with Country Road A-409 south of Smallett.
Really get off the beaten path with eight miles of gravel road on Sugar Camp National Forest Scenic Byway to the southwest of Springfield! You’ll begin near Roaring Rivers State Park on Highway 112. Continue down Forest Road 197 to Highway 86. This scenic route in Missouri includes not only Roaring Rivers State Park but also the banks of Table Rock Lake.
